UPS, DHL, and FedEx Set for 2026 Peak Season Rate Hikes; Fuel Surcharges to Rise in Tandem

UPS, DHL Express and FedEx have released their 2026 Q4 peak season surcharge updates. Together with the latest fuel surcharge increase, shipping costs for cross-border shipments to Europe and the US will rise significantly ahead of Black Friday and Christmas peak season.

Fuel Surcharge (Latest as of Sep 21, for shipments exported from China, updated weekly)

• UPS: 52.50% (+2.75% week-on-week)

• FedEx: 51.75% (+2.75% week-on-week)

• DHL: 45.00% (+1.25% week-on-week); projected to rise to 46.25% on Sep 28.

Fuel surcharge applies to both contract and retail shippers and will be charged on top of peak surcharges.

Peak Season Demand Surcharges

1. DHL Express: Effective Oct 1, 2026 to Feb 5, 2027. Demand surcharge applies to international time-definite shipments from China to global destinations. Rates vary by origin and destination and are subject to change based on network volume.

2. FedEx: Demand surcharge adjustment effective Sep 21, 2026. Oversize & additional handling surcharges for non-standard packages will be enforced during peak time. US inbound processing fee and residential delivery surcharges have also been increased.

3. UPS: Surge emergency fee applied from Sep 20. Peak surcharge runs from Sep 27, 2026 to Jan 17, 2027. Oversize packages may incur up to $590 per piece. Shippers exceeding agreed weekly volume threshold will face extra surge fees. US customs line item fee increased to $3.5 per line beyond 5 lines from Sep 6.

⚠️ Reminders

Cost increases mainly come from stacked surcharges instead of base rate rises. Oversized and irregular packages see the biggest cost jump. Eligibility for peak surcharge waivers depends on your carrier contract.

We recommend shippers arrange shipments in advance, optimize packaging to avoid oversize fees and update sales quotations for overseas buyers.
